What is the Make You Happy Management System?

My Make You Happy Management System didn’t just come about overnight, and even though I graduated with a degree in Business Administration from the prestigious, private University of Puget Sound, I certainly didn’t learn it in college.   It actually got its start out of a huge amount of frustration.  I was the guy who had become a slave to my business.  It seemed like I was always responding to things and taking care of problems.   I had no time for myself.  It was not fun.

But let me back up……

While studying some of the world’s best customer service companies in the early 1980’s, I determined that creating an Exceptional Customer Service Company was one of the best things I could do to make our company the choice for retailers.

I built an in-house reference resource for achieving great customer service in our company, American Retail Supply. I then shared the information in the Retail Tips I send to our customers. The response was so positive that I decided to edit them into a resource for our customers. From that, I created the book Out-Nordstrom Nordstrom – Creating The World’s Best Customer Service. For more information on that story, click this button:

My business continued to grow, due in large part to the exceptional customer service that we consistently and persistently trained into our staff.

But I had a problem.

I sure as heck didn’t want any more employees… talk about headaches.

In 1991 my business was nicely profitable but I had decided that I didn’t want it to grow anymore because it seemed like the only thing that grew as fast as my business were my headaches, and I sure as heck didn’t want any more employees… talk about headaches.  I might as well have been a baby sitter.

In 1992, I attended a three day Total Quality Management Seminar sponsored by the Seattle Chamber of Commerce.  The first speaker was about my age, at the time, and started by saying, “Until I found TQM I could have cared less if my business grew any more.  It seemed like the only thing that grew as fast as my business was my headaches and I sure as heck didn’t want any more employees… talk about headaches.”

Did I sit up and pay attention!  That’s exactly how I felt, and I was more than interested in hearing about this guy’s management guru, Phil Crosby.  I listened to the speaker and the rest of the presentations for three days and was absolutely jazzed to continue to learn and get started with a management system that would work for me.

I read everything I could about Phil Crosby and while I liked some of his stuff, I didn’t see how it could work for me.  So I thought, OK, I’ll read TQM Guru #2 W. Edwards Deming and it will make sense.

I was just more confused.  Again, I liked some of Deming’s ideas, but a lot of it was counter to Crosby, and the system as a whole, just wouldn’t work for me.

So I thought, I’ll read TQM Guru #3, Joseph Juran.  He’ll put it all together and it will make sense.  After reading Juran, I was only more confused.  None of them had the answer.  None had a management system that would get me excited about growing my business.

So I took what I had learned from all of the different sources I had learned from, and created the Make You Happy Management System. To learn more about the systems I created click this button:

But there was still one piece missing.

Vincent Zirpoli says, “A organization’s performance management systems are what power its ability to meet goals and objectives of the strategic plan.”

When I would talk with people about my management system, I found that many of them were very curious about performance reviews. They would even go so far as to say, “Performance reviews suck!”

I realized that I needed to address performance reviews in my management system. And actually, I needed to REPLACE them completely, with Personal Development Interviews (PDI’s). Now you don’t have to avoid the painful process of performance reviews. You can ditch them altogether and replace them with Personal Development Interviews, where the giver and receiver of PDI’s both leave motivated and get you the results that the organization wants. That’s what Make You Happy Management is all about – showing you exactly how to take control of your business with Step-By-Step, Easy to Implement Systems.

Like most that have come here, you’re likely an accomplished, driven, business owner, or top manager… and since you’re still reading you know that if you could control your business better you could accomplish even more. That’s what Make You Happy Management is all about – showing you exactly how to take control of your business with Step-By-Step, Easy to Implement Systems.

You can start from scratch, but the good news is you don’t need to.  I’ll show you how to use what’s already been developed to implement the systems you need in your business.

You have undoubtedly been part of this conversation because whenever business owners get together the conversation always gets around to the headaches.  Trying to get staff functioning as an effective team, at a high level as individuals, and in general, means getting things done right consistently by systems instead of fighting fires and fixing mistakes.

In fact many business owners decide they just don’t want the headaches anymore and decide not to grow their business.

It need not be that way.  The reality is, when managed properly your employees become the ultimate leverage, job security, and wealth for YOU!

As I mentioned above, these are some of the resources that will help you take control of your business:

You will take control of your business and your life when you create systems to run, control, and improve your business with or without you there.
