Real Business Freedom: My Personal Experience

Over a decade ago, I took a three-week Mediterranean cruise. Before leaving, I told my operations manager the ship and the cruise line I was on and said, “If you need to contact me, you’ll have to find me.”

Here’s the incredible part: I knew it was fine telling her that because for the past 20 years, I haven’t received a single call while on vacation. With robust systems in place, I knew my business would thrive without me. I didn’t worry about interruptions, and I had complete confidence everything was running smoothly.

I was in the final stages of acquiring another business while I was on the cruise so I exchanged a couple emails with the other business owner, but I knew my business wouldn’t need me.

Years ago, I faced a real challenge—a skiing accident left me with a level 4 concussion. I was out of commission for four months. I was doing stupid things and then not even remembering that I did them. I was so bad that on the advice of good friends who were my financial advisor
and CPA I gladly signed away my legal rights to make business decisions to my son and wife.
When I returned, I was thrilled to discover exactly what I thought I would, the business was running better than ever because everyone knows their job is to help improve the business every day.

And here’s the kicker—I hardly ever get calls. In fact, I feel like the lonely Maytag repairman. Thanks to the systems I’ve implemented, I receive maybe one call every other month.
